Let me share this story with you below.

A personal example of how to successfully emulate competitors is my Emoji app. First, I took a close look at what the market offered and downloaded all the major emoticon apps. I liked what I saw, but noticed that there was a lack of variety and limited functionality.

I wondered how I could improve upon these existing apps, given that the Emoji keyboard had a limited number of emoticons that couldn’t be increased. I was also curious how profitable these apps could be if they were only being used once.

I kept brainstorming until it hit me. I couldn’t add more emoticons to the Emoji keyboard, but I could include unlimited emoticons within my app that people could send as images via text message or email.

I created an app that not only enabled the Emoji keyboard, but also contained an additional 450 emoticons within the app itself, which could be shared via SMS, e-mail, Facebook, and so on. The app was used constantly since users had to return to the app to send an emoticon.

The Emoji app was developed in two weeks. It followed the freemium model, meaning free with an in-app purchase option. The app hit the number one spot in the App Store’s productivity category and the number 12 spot in the top free overall category within six days, raking in nearly $500 per day. Bingo.

Whenever you decide to look into emulating an app, ask yourself these six questions:

1. Why are people purchasing this?
2. Can I do something to emulate this idea and take it to another level?
3. What other ideas would this app’s demographic like?
4. How many other similar apps are in the market? (Visit TopAppCharts.com to find out.)
5. How successful and consistent have they been?
6. How does their marketing and pricing model work?

This is a real business and you need to Work.

Sorry to burst your bubble but also success stories worked hard to get were they are now.

The Draw Something and Angry Bird Story are a perfect example of this and i talked about that in the Tiny Little Businesses Story i wrote let me post the story here:

brink of bankruptcy and then they created these
“Magical” apps
and Angry Brids went on to earn in an “over night
push button riches” $10 million dollars in a year
on the App store.

And Draw Something an iPhone App acquired for
$170 million dollars by Zynga Creators of Farm
Ville and many other hit games. All of this after
3 weeks on the Apple App Store and earning 100K
dollars per day and a 30 million user base.

When we see a successful story like this
everybody thinks it’s easy and anyone can do it.
It can be done very easily on the internet.

But…

Both ROVIO (Angry Birds) and OMGPOP (Draw
Something) have created a lot of other games and
they were NOT having success and they were on the
brink of depleting their funding and going out of
business.

They sticked to it and one app made them the big
bucks but after hard work and long term mindset
and planning.

You Don’t Have To Be a Coding Expert or Write a Single Line of Code…

You just need to hire a good programmer that will make a reality the sketch you provided him that you draw on a piece of paper.

It’s as simple as that.

You don’t need a computer program to create the sketch and pass it to your programmer, you can just draw the App Interface or Screens in a piece of paper once you have done your research of an app you want to make better and give that to your programmer and adjust your vision of the app with what the programmer creates for you.

But Were do you hire your App Developer?

Top Hiring Resources

These websites allow programmers to bid on jobs that you post. As you can imagine, the competition creates a bidding frenzy that gives you a good chance of getting quality work at a low price.

Here are a few of my favorite outsourcing sites:

oDesk— Its work diary feature tracks the hours your programmer is working for you and takes screenshots of the programmer’s desktop at certain time intervals.

Freelancer— This site has the most programmers listed. They claim that twice as many programmers will respond to your ad, and I found this to be mostly true.

Guru and Elance. Both of these sites have huge lists of programmers.

You need to read this Through SEO Analysis by Jonathan Leger called Anchor Text Optimization – How Much is Too Much?.

This analysis took 5 hours and he took a sample of

• 1,500 keywords from 30 very diverse markets. A wide range of markets.
• He ran those keywords through Google to get all of the top-level domains ranking on the first page for the keywords.Also he removed all ranking inner page urls from the data set. (in the full article he explains why he did that)
• He checked the link profiles of all of those domains to see what percentage of their links had anchor text matching the keywords they were ranking for.

So with that in mind he found some interesting data.

Johnatan says:

So what can you take away from all of this data and these numbers? In short, exact-match domain names are your friend! They can be ranked with a lot fewer links and apparently have a much better chance of not getting penalized for anchor-text over-optimization. This includes the “lesser” domains (.info, .biz, etc.), as well as domain names with the keywords separated by dashes (e.g. work-from-home.biz).

Also, if you’re not using EMDs, it’s important to diversify your anchor text a lot. How much is “a lot” really depends on your market. So do the research. Check out the link profiles of other ranking sites in your market and see what their anchor text looks like.

Exact-Match Domains Have A Lot Less Links

Also he said:

Another important point about the ranking exact-match domains versus all of the other ranking top-level domains: they have a lot fewer links aimed at them. In fact, on average the EMDs only have about 15% as many links as the other ranking sites.

One stand-out example is pharmaceutical-jobs.com, which is ranking on page one for (of course) “pharmaceutical jobs.” It only has about two dozen external domains linking to the entire site. The other top ranking results typically have many hundreds or thousands of domains linking to them. Clearly Google is highly favoring the EMD in this case.

We have talked about other Smart SEO Strategies to follow in the new Penguin Era and a How to Rank #1 in Google Video by Matt Cutts but this data is interesting.

Here’s a breakdown of the number of links from unique external domains ranking the non-Exact Match Domains sites versus the Exact Match Domain sites:

Why is Google Allowing this?

If Google didn’t allow this kind of natural linking to brand sites then some big companies would take a hit and the whole balance of the internet would go to the thank (Google’s index would get a little messy).

So here’s John Explanation:

It makes sense, really.

If Google penalized sites with a high EMA even if their domain name was an exact match for the keywords, they would end up dropping all kinds of brand-name sites out of the rankings.

Think about it: what anchor text do most people use when linking out to a brand-name site (like Ford or Adobe or Amazon, etc.)? Their name, of course!

So Google has to give those sites a pass despite having a high EMA. It just makes sense that Google won’t penalize you for links with anchor text matching the keywords in your domain name. That’s often the site’s brand, and it will naturally have a much higher EMA for those keywords.

Is Google giving a pass to all EMDs with very high EMAs? The data can’t answer that question. But clearly they are giving a pass to a lot of them.

Penguin update is now the new most talked about topic on the SEO circles and everybody seem to have lost track of how to optimize their sites to rank in the search engines.

I will show you 5 SEO Smart Ways to optimize your sites to rank #1 with this Penguin Analysis.

Basically the over optimization penalty it’s very real and the things you need to do in this New “SEO” World it’s not to use a money anchor text over and over again.

This is not natural and leads to the creation of spam tactics in the eyes of Google. So now Google forces you to create content and link sites in a natural way and not targeting just a specific “money keyword” you want to rank for.

A great way to create content that will get your Authority Sites ranking are Guest Blogging and Content Curation because you are sharing great content from other blogs and you can leverage the audience of other people to promote your sites. So apply this 5 Smart Ways to Optimize your sites

Method #1: Create Microsites

What are those? Besides being important enough to SEO that we decided to use that as one of the words in our company name, they have been a great way to rank sites in the past, and continue to be even after this update. Microsites are small(ish) topic-focused sites that provide useful content relative to your niche, and make sure to cite your main site as a primary source. Google wants the Internet to be filled with sites that provides users what they are looking for, and give authority to sites that are relevant to what the user is looking for. By creating smaller sites of “higher quality”, you get to expand your presence in your niche, and use that expanded visibility and send relevant and authoritative positive ranking signals towards your main site.

Method #2: High Quality Blog Networks

This might be the most “black hat” solution, but it’s still affective. Recently ALN and BMR have proven that low quality networks which seemed to good to be true, are too good to be true.

It’s no longer enough to have private networks with small amounts of content, anchor text that is poorly placed within the context of the article, no (or very little) accountability in the area of content quality, and other gaping network-wide footprints and general low quality attributes.

A completely internalized niche blog network (which in reality is really a group of microsites) is as effective as it ever was and generally more selective than large public blog networks to ensure proper quality control and avoid footprints. More on that later!

Method #3: Diversify Anchor Text

If you are building links yourself, you have probably reached a decision where you could spend X (whether in time or dollars) with the anchor text of “a term I want to rank for” or “a term that appears naturally but I’m not trying to rank for”. Although you are consciously aware that you need a natural mix of both, each time an SEO’er is faced with that decision they tend to usually pick the first option because, well… it’s no fun to spend time and money building links that will probably not directly help you rank! Stop doing that and make sure that over 50% of your links contain anchor text that isn’t a keyword you are trying to rank for.

What anchor text should you be using? From the data we’ve evaluated, “MySiteDomain.com”, “MySiteDomain”, “http://mysitedomain.com”, “http://www.mysitedomain.com”, “The Title of My Website”, “here”, and “the title of one of my H1′s (that isn’t a keyword I’m trying to rank for)”, were generally used as anchors on sites that were not affected by the most recent Google update and are probably a good starting point to consider using moving forward.

Method #4: Play Google’s Game

Get completely legitimate whitehat links! All of the previous points are ways to emulate a “natural” backlink profile. Meaning, ways to make your site look like it’s whitehat, despite possibly taking some shortcuts. The other (often forgotten) thing you can do, is actually use whitehat strategies!

Write legitimate guest posts on niche sites, find ways to get media coverage (HARO is probably one of the easiest ways to find news stories related to your niche). Last, as we’ve talked about before, viral marketing not only provides lots of visitors, but a ton of legitimate link power.

Method #5: Run Your SEO Sites Like a Real Business

One of the biggest things I noticed when pouring through our massive amounts of data is that sites that portrayed themselves as a “business” fared a lot better than sites which viewed themselves as a way to obtain and leverage traffic from Google in order to monetize.

What does this mean? A lot of things, but one of them is to look at other traffic sources besides Google. Not only will that make you less reliant on Google, and their seemingly fickle SERP shuffles, but those other traffic sources will almost certainly indirectly help your site rank better on Google.

It’s called the The “Blood Hound” Model. Vishen Lakhiani explained his step-by-step process in creating one of his highly lucrative websites by showing his formula.

Becoming the “conduit” in your market is oftentimes an excellent way to make a big entree without having to kill yourself with content creation.

A smart mix of curation and understanding very well where to go look for your target audience, then becoming the “bridge person” (conduit) between an expert in the field and your audience.

This model is super-sweet and hyper-effective.

Don’t make the mistake thinking this model is too simple to actually work.

Then i saw an excelent example of content curation on Steven Resell’s blog about the “Blood Hound” Model

Vishen Lakhiani generated $930,000.00 in 18 months from one blog… from scratch!

Steven took all the information on the video and made a very good list of things to do and replicate Vishen Success. I like this way of creating content because you are naturally sharing valuable stuff and also linking naturally to other sites and that’s what google wants. To give value to your “Tribe”.

Follow these steps and build an authority website!

The Steps To Building Authority Websites

In order to build his Remote Viewing blog, he completed the following steps:

Step 1. Setup your blog

He reocmmends you use WordPress, and make sure you choose a decent looking theme.

Vishen recommends the Canvas theme by WooThemes, which incidentally is the same theme I use on many of my sites.

Step 2. Produce Content

As you already know, you don’t need to “write” your own content to become the expert or dominate your niche, and Vishen recommends the same thing…

He suggests that instead of “writing your own content”, you REVIEW other people’s content online

In other words, search the internet for articles on the topic, get permission from the article author to use the content on your site – then write an ORIGINAL introduction. (I personally don’t curate in this fashion but it worked awesome for him).

Another thing he would do is to post a video from Youtube with an intro and add a comment request at the bottom of the post.

I know… really simple stuff that doesn’t take much effort.

One thing he mentions in the video is that he created about 100 blog posts in short order to his blog and kept adding more content as time went on, and he outsourced all content creation after month 6 (to eLance).

Step 3. Get Leads

Build a list.

It’s essential to your business online.

To do this, he just used a generic aweber form for his blog…

An interesting tidbit was that he added a “Coming Soon” invitation, i.e. an invite to sign up to his list to get access to an upcoming free course in the beginning stages of his blog (since he didn’t have any of that setup at first).

His signup rate for the “coming soon” invite was 37%!

As for what he emailed his subscribers… well, he just sent them back to some of the hottest blog posts a couple of times per week.

And within a 6 month period of time he had created a list of 5,000 people (just from organic traffic).

Step 4. Monetize

He didn’t monetize his blog for 6 months… and when he finally decided to monetize he decided to become an affiliate of the various products already available in the marketplace.

He then interviewed the top experts in the niche and put calls to action in the interview to buy their product.

In his his very first interview he generated over $10,000 in sales; and by his second interview, he generated over $110,000! (from his small list of 5,000 subscribers).

Why did this work?

Because he had built trust and authority.

People prefer to have someone else tell them what to buy, IF it is a recommendation from a trusted source which Vishen became over a 6 month period of sending out good quality information.

He calls this the “Robert Ebert Effect” (Robert Ebert is a film critic… in case you don’t know who he is).

Not only did he become the trusted source of information for his readers, but he also became the “star maker” of the niche (and the #1 affiliate).

When i saw this video my content creation focus changed and i was sold, and as you have seen i have been creating this kind of content. You can implement this right away because it works!

TLB Last Chance (My Business, The iPhone Apps Story)

The other day i was reading an email that i
received from Andre Chaperon and
the title of the email was “[TLB] Sell to the
crazy ones (the weirdos)” and he was
actually talking about a story of himself and
that he is a “weird” customer buying
all the golf club, putters, golf bags and more.

But the reason of this email is because this
email made me reflect back to when i started this
business on the internet.

I started on 2005 with $200 dollars my father
loaned me to get a hosting account and a domain.
Then
i had a site with no traffic and one thing let to
the other and i landed on a long sales page and
bought
the $97 dollar course and the rest is history.

Then in 2008 i was doing this online business
thing full time and started building my list or
my “Tribe” of followers.

And Guess What?

it worked!

But i started counting and that’s when it hit me!

2005 to 2012 = 8 years of hard work!

Actually i invest a lot of the money back to the
business and when i started
treating this as a business in (2008) the income
started to show up in return.

And the businesses that give me money are
actually built with the Tiny Little Businesses
principles.

Building a long-term site that provide value to
the market you are in.

Do you want to take the long route or have a
short cut?

Take the “Short Cut” and TLB it’s that.

You learn the Right Business Core foundations
from the start and actually you get the right
mindset you need to make it online. Then you
start implementing the things you need in order
to setup your First Tiny Little Business and
doing it as an Affiliate.

Once you can do this as an Affiliate and Earn
Real Money that can get you out of your job.
Later you can get one Level Up and be a Info
Product Marketer.

But you have the foundation of what you need and

When we see a successful story like this
everybody thinks it’s easy and anyone can do it.
It can be done very easily on the internet.

But…

Both ROVIO (Angry Birds) and OMGPOP (Draw
Something) have created a lot of other games and
they were NOT having success and they were on the
brink of depleting their funding and going out of
business.

They sticked to it and one app made them the big
bucks but after hard work and long term mindset
and planning.

It’s the same with TLB maybe the first it’s not a
hit, but the next one will be your home run

Hey, it’s Andre here…

This morning I went to meet a buddy for breakfast
at 10:30am.

I chose that time strategically. Because I had an
ulterior motive.

Muahahaha!

You see, here in Spain the shops open at 10am. So
meeting Mark at 10:30 gave me 25 minutes, more or
less.

Perfect for my little detour to the golf shop.

The night before I went to a review site. And I
read just three review comments.

> Just upgraded from original R11. This
> club is even easier to hit with bigger
> head and more adjustability.
> I am now getting great trajectory and
> carry with another 10 yards distance.
> In a word, brilliant!

That was it. That’s all I needed to read.

Took no more than 5 minutes in total.

So this morning I rolled into the pro shop.
Went directly to the TaylorMade rack, and
picked up the new R11S.

Went to the till, and paid.

399 euros later and one minute early, I was at
the breakfast bar waiting for Mark.

If that’s all that happened, well I guess that
wouldn’t have been all that odd.

But exactly 6 days earlier (last Saturday), I
picked up a brand new golf bag.

147 euros.

And three weeks earlier … a 60 degree Titleist
Vokey SM4 wedge.

120 euros.

And the month before that, a TaylorMade RocketBallz
fairway wood.

Another 150 euros.

Two weeks prior to that, the RocketBallz 4 hybrid.

130 euros.

And although the timeline is now getting a little
fuzzy for me, there was also a new Odyssey White
Ice Two-Ball putter.

Well … because my other Odyssey blade putter
wasn’t performing for me.

Which, of course, was the putter’s fault. Not mine.

Crazy right?

Not even close.

I’ve been going to our local David Leadbetter Golf
Academy to get lessons once a week.

The real crazy part … I’m a 28 handicapper. Which
is the worse handicap for a male.

In other words … I’m basically shit.

But each week I tell myself an internal story.
That in order to improve, and lower my handicap,
I need the best equipment.

So the crazy cycle never ends.

I currently have 13 clubs in my bag. Meaning
there is place for ONE MORE club.

So now I’m on constant lookout to see what
I can get to max out what I’m allowed to use.

Who’s the weirdo in this scenario – me?

You’re damn right!

Yet to swing these expensive clubs about, I
need to play golf, of course.

And here in Spain green fees start at 35 euros
a pop on the low end, right up to 82 euros.

A typical round is around 45-50 euros. For one
freakin’ 18 hole round of golf.

It’s bananas.

But I LOVE IT! … absolutely love it to bits.

And as crazy as I may seem to a golf “outsider”,
I’m far from the craziest.

My buddy Mark Thompson is prob’ly worse. And there
are millions just like us all around the world.

Millions.

Which leads me to the point of this email.

But you are targeting a specific keyword.

6 – Write Articles Based on Traffic Keywords: On what niche are you in? Are you on the weight loss niche? Then enter your main keyword to the Keyword research tool.

Enter your main keyword and watch what other Long Tail keywords you can target. Look for the ones that have less traffic because they will be easier to rank for. Look for keywords in the range of 5,000 searches per month specially in the competitive weight loss niche. Choose 5 keywords with that amount of searches. Then write an article about that keyword. For example you have found the keyword “Weight loss diets for women”

Then write an article starting with the title: 6 Easy Weight Loss Diet Tips for Women

When you write content, make each one of your articles target one specific keyword.

Now I’m not telling you to create content for the sake of ranking for specific keywords. That’s a horrible strategy.

What I mean is, after you write blog reader focused content, make sure you have a “dream keyword” that you’d like to rank for on your new article.

For example, the video I shared with you last week on the blog post “How to increase blog conversion rates.”

It was helpful content, tailored directly towards you, the blog reader, but eventually, I’m hoping that article will rank for Blog Conversion Rates.

What If You’re Dealing With Highly Competitive Keywords?

That takes a lot more work, for sure, but that’s where resource pages come into play.

I’ll explain.

Instead of having a dream keyword for one article, you come up with a dream keyword for a group of articles.

And then you group those articles on a resource page.

For example, look at our resource page about WordPress SEO. Yes, we’re putting high quality content out about search engine optimization, but ideally, we’d also like to pick up some rankings for WordPress SEO.

And instead of trying to do it with one single article, we’re doing it with a group of articles because we know search engines like content that’s complete, and exhaustive.

One Word of Warning about This Simple Tip

I’ve got to say this because many people make this huge mistake.

When you start using this strategy, do not begin stuffing your content with keywords that you’d like to rank for.

The goal is to take your regular content, and just keep a keyword in the back of your mind while you’re writing it.

Don’t use the keywords for the sake of using the keywords. Remember, you want to put your reader first… always.

Because, even though the search engines can be gamed, they’re actively trying to combat “cheating.”

And while you may get away with some shady tactics for a short while, it’s not worth risking your blog… your blog that you’ve poured your time and effort into… because you tried to take a shortcut.

Then, of course, there’s Thesis…

Here’s a dirty secret about WordPress SEO:

There’s only so much you can do to your blog… on your own site… that can help you rank higher in search engines.

Aside from this simple tip, the other thing that you can do is sport rock-solid code that will supercharge your SEO.

For example, small changes like having h2 tags surrounding your headlines on your home page… and h1 tags surrounding your headlines on your single post pages.

Or, as another example, if you’re using a left sidebar, right content layout, you’ll want your content loading “before” your sidebar… even though it looks like it comes “after it.”

You’ve read about it, and it’s not new, but it’s effective.
One thing that surprises me about guest blogging is the rate at which big companies are using it, whereas bloggers pay little attention to it.

If you search for education related keywords you will notice a lot of pdf files already indexed in the search engines. The fun thing is that if you try to read any one of those pdf files you will notice that those files actually have their own pagerank, which is often very high in most cases. In other words, if you could have 20 pagerank 4 ebooks linking back to your site with your desired keywords, you can imagine how much impact that will make.

Very few people write ebooks to build links, so this particular tactic is highly underutilized. Here’s your opportunity to capitalize on it.

Focus on writing quality ebooks, embed links back to your site in them, and try to market the heck out of them.

5. Be Interviewed

You’ll be surprised at the number of people willing to interview you just to build their portfolio. You don’t necessarily need to be established in your field; you just have to be interesting and unique.

It doesn’t matter which field you’re in, you can still be interviewed. Contact other bloggers in your niche for interview opportunities, ask relevant media outlets whether they want to interview you, and subscribe to sites like Help a Reporter Out to get updates on who might be interested in interviewing you.
